Premium Rate Numbers
Premium rate numbers are numbers which cost more than 50p per minute to call and begin 09 AND 0871, 0872 & 0873. They are used for a multitude of purposes and their use is regulated by Phonepayplus.
These numbers are used for premium rate services (PRS) such as are commonly seen on television game shows. Typically the caller will pay £1 per minute or in some cases as much as £1.50 per minute to dial these numbers.
One of the most likely places to find the use of premium rate services is in the classified sections of newspapers.

They are used for such services as:
- Dating Lines
- Tarot Reading
- Adult Entertainment Lines (Own Special Range)
- Employment Sites
- Fax Back Services
- Computer Support Lines
Some premium rate service providers use these numbers for two-way chat lines on dating sites. In this circumstance the callers are put into a conversation together even though they may not previously have known each other. They can chat without revealing their names or phone numbers if they so wish.
One of the best situations to use PRS is for advice or technical support lines. For example a computer support line charged at £1.50 per minute would enable the providing company to earn £90 per hour effectively paying for the engineers time in most cases.
Another example for the use of these numbers is for TV competition lines including lotteries and prize draws.
Finally 09 numbers can be the best option to fund charitable support lines offering counselling and advice when other means of funding are unavailable.
