0845 Numbers are local rate Non-Geographic Numbers (NGNs). NGNs are not assigned to a particular telephone line or circuit. They provide callers with a contact number which gives no indication as to the location of the line being called. They are useful when a company wishes to portray a national presence to their customers. The owner of the number can retarget the NGN to any other telephone number including mobile, international and even other NGNs at any time therefore enabling them to take their calls on the move or at other locations. It is often the case that a business who provide a national service will choose an 0845 number because they do not wish to be judged on their location, yet still wish to offer callers the chance to ring at a local calling rate independent of where they are dialling from in the country.
